What is Complex Betrayal Trauma?

Complex betrayal trauma, also known as relational trauma, occurs when a person experiences multiple and repeated instances of betrayal by someone they trust, especially within a relational context like family or intimate partnerships. This type of trauma can have a profound impact on a person's sense of safety, trust, and self-esteem. 


Key characteristics of complex betrayal trauma:

  • Repeated and relational:

    The trauma involves multiple instances of betrayal by someone the person relies on or has a close relationship with. 

  • Breach of trust:

    It stems from a violation of trust and a sense of safety, often within intimate relationships or with primary caregivers. 

  • Long-term effects:

    The impact can be significant and long-lasting, affecting self-esteem, relationships, and overall mental health

Examples of complex betrayal trauma:

  • A child experiencing abuse or neglect by a parent.

  • A partner enduring infidelity or emotional manipulation in a relationship.

  • A friend is experiencing repeated acts of betrayal by a close friend.

Symptoms of complex betrayal trauma:

  • Emotional distress, including anger, confusion, helplessness, and sadness.

  • Difficulty trusting others and yourself.

  • Hypervigilance, constantly scanning for threats or danger.

  • Relationship problems due to mistrust and fear of intimacy.

  • Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares.

  • Self-blame, shame, and guilt.

  • Physical symptoms include headaches, chronic pain, and sleep disturbances.

  • Emotional numbing or detachment.

Healing from Complex Betrayal Trauma:

  • Acknowledge and process the emotions associated with the trauma.

  • Seek support from therapists or support groups.

  • Set healthy boundaries in relationships.

  • Practice self-compassion and self-care.

  • Focus on rebuilding trust and safety in relationships.
